PRESS RELEASE : West Kalimantan Deputy Governor Krisantus Kurniawan: No Tolerance for Illegal Mining

This statement was conveyed directly by Deputy Governor Krisantus Kurniawan during an audience with the Regional Executive Board of the Indonesian People’s Mining Association (DPW APRI) of West Kalimantan on Wednesday, May 21, 2025.
During the meeting, DPW APRI West Kalimantan, led by Adi Normansyah, reported the rampant occurrence of illegal sand and gravel (C-class mineral) extraction within plantation concession areas (HGU) across several districts. These activities were deemed not only unlawful but also detrimental to regional income and environmental sustainability.

> “We have received numerous public complaints regarding illegal C-class mining within plantation concession areas. This is not just a legal violation but also a source of potential regional revenue loss,” said Adi Normansyah, Chairman of DPW APRI West Kalimantan.
In response, Deputy Governor Krisantus Kurniawan firmly stated that the West Kalimantan Provincial Government will not tolerate any form of illegal mining, whether conducted by individuals or corporations.
> “We will take strict action against any violators. No company should misuse its plantation concession (HGU) to conduct unauthorized mining activities. There will be no tolerance for illegal mining in West Kalimantan,” emphasized Krisantus.
The Provincial Government, he added, will establish a special monitoring task force to oversee and take action against companies that exploit West Kalimantan’s natural resources without providing tangible contributions to the local communities and regional development.
The Deputy Governor also requested DPW APRI West Kalimantan to compile and submit detailed field data regarding illegal mining activities and corporate violations within HGU areas. The collected data will serve as a key reference for the provincial government in implementing legal and administrative enforcement measures.
The meeting concluded with a joint commitment between the West Kalimantan Provincial Government and DPW APRI to strengthen collaboration in improving the governance of community-based mining towards a system that is legal, fair, and sustainable.
> “We want community mining to become a source of welfare, not a source of conflict or environmental damage. Therefore, close cooperation between the government and organizations like APRI is essential to ensure responsible and legal mining practices,” Krisantus concluded.
